Britten Owen ~ A Brief History |
Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Jan Britten Owen knew he wanted to become a musician after seeing The Beatles on the "Ed Sullivan Show," and spent his teenage years performing with his first band in a local exotic dancer lounge. (The gig with the topless dancers ended when a TV repairman came to his family's house and recognized him in front of his Dad.) He's a two-time Beatlefest sound-alike contest winner, has appeared on Jimmy Fink's 92.3 K-Rock radio show in NYC singing his originals and a Beatle song, been interviewed by Kelly Quinn of Star 99 in Connecticut, and talked and played live on Joe Daily's Morning Show on 92.1 Lite-FM in New York. His performance at the Mohonk Mountain House in New York, for the annual "Cousin Brucie Rocks Around the Clock" weekend, with the legendary DJ and Beatles' friend, Bruce Morrow, has become a staple of his gig schedule, and has led to Jan performing on the charity telethon synonymous with Bruce Morrow, the annual Variety - The Children's Charity. The tremendous response to that performance and encouragement by his fellow performers, the audience, and the staff, led Jan to focus on performing his incredible Beatles solo performances and to add in his original compositions. 2005 marked Jan's first appearance at the Cavern Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they nicknamed him, "El Maestro!" and 2006 saw him perform at the 26th Annual Lennon Tribute in New York City, with Ben Taylor, Sonya Kitchell, Garland Jeffries, Michelle Shocked, and Aztec Two Step. Jan opened the show with Lennon's "Starting Over," and did another set after intermission. Listen to his CDs and hear why Jimmy Fink formerly of 92.3 K-Rock and now on 107.1 The Peak, calls Jan Owen "an artist in his own right," and why Jan won the Beatlefest sound-alike contest two years in a row! Why Sid Bernstein, the Beatles' promoter, and manager to artists like The Rascals, said, "You're good! Very good!" Why Beatles' friend, Bruce "Cousin Brucie" Morrow of Sirius and the old WABeatlesC in NYC, said, "Man, where have you been hiding? Jan, you've got a gift -- a real gift!" Little wonder crowds everywhere -- from the Turning Point, where Jan opened for Roger McGuinn (of The Byrds), to The Ritz where Jan was showcased in a night of new musical talent, to private parties all over the area for such celebrities as Ron Howard, Stanley Tucci, Matt Dillon, and Dave Letterman's Late Show guitarist Sid McGinnis (who told Jan, "Man, you're GREAT!") -- have gone wild for Jan! In addition, Jan has played nearly every college on the Coffeehouse Circuit from NYC to LA; played at The Bitter End, The Improv, and Kenny's Castaways; and has opened for or backed up Sid Bernstein, Bruce "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian, Robert Klein, Aztec Two Step, Andy Kaufman, The Drifters, Don Imus, The Coasters, Robert Gordon, The Shirelles, Lenny Welch, The Chiffons, Buzzy Linhart, The Crystals, and The Platters. The NEC Contemporary Reports artist rating gave him five stars (the highest) in most categories, and rated him as "highly recommended."
